Listen to Medeski Martin & Wood’s groovy “End of the World Party”

It’s off the prolific ‘avant-groove’ trio’s forthcoming album, ‘Omnisphere.’

Funk, avant jazz and free improvisation come together in “End of the World Party,” a new(ish) single by Medeski Martin & Wood.

It’s originally off the trio’s 2004 record of the same name, but has been ‘reimagined’ as a live cut that will appear on Omnisphere, due on September 14. And they’ve roped in contemporary chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound, who have worked with the likes of Jonny Greenwood, Björk and even the Met, to perform the track with them.

This version calms the original’s strident groove and balances a dark—almost foreboding—atmosphere with upbeat brass passages and Chris Wood’s spidery basslines. In other words, it fits the title of the song perfectly.
