Last Friday, jazz/hip hop artist Kiefer shared his latest EP, Superbloom. His label Stones Throw followed up the release yesterday with a short documentary on the pianist/producer that you can watch below.

The Los Angeles-based pianist studied under renowned jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell at UCLA. He is also a producer, and recently contributed to Anderson .Paak’s 2019 albums Ventura and Oxnard.

On Superbloom, he weaves together a stirring blend of hip hop and jazz, employing startling counter melodies throughout. On “May 20,” an analog synth melody arises against an established piano lead, while a fuzzy electronic beat and an energetic piano tune compete on “Good Looking.”

“This music is naturally me. It sounds like me. As with everything that I release, I am showing you what I love about music,” Kiefer said in a statement. “Making rhythm, harmony, melody and sounds that move me. I spend everyday talking to students and mentors and listening to music and finding things that I think are beautiful, and then translating them through my unique musicality.”

Kiefer previously dropped his Bridges EP earlier in the year. He also released his sophomore record Happysad in 2018.
