Jon Batiste has enlisted Zadie Smith for “Show Me the Way,” the latest cut from his upcoming album We Are.
“Show Me the Way” is the fourth We Are single, following “Cry,” “I Need You” and its title track. Batiste’s new cut features an indelible layering of funk guitar and bright ’70s R&B vocals atop an infectious rhythm.
“Zadie and I have been virtually jamming from time to time during the pandemic,” Batiste shared in a statement. “She’s quite an accomplished singer and after one of our sessions I asked her to sing on ‘Show Me the Way.’ She can also be heard at the beginning of the track asking me what I want to listen to. Just as it does in the lyric, we’d often talk about records that we both are listening to.”
“Show Me the Way” was released alongside a simple visualizer that features a loop of Batiste dancing and playing basketball in a yard alongside shots of New York City’s skyline.
Prior to working on his new album, Batiste crafted the soundtrack for the Disney/Pixar film Soul, which follows a music teacher, voiced by Jamie Foxx, who tries to find his big break.
We Are will arrive on March 19. Check out the “Show Me the Way” visualizer here:
