The ten-piece SEED Ensemble have released “Afronaut,” one of eight tracks on their forthcoming debut album, Driftglass.
All members of the ensemble get to shine on the rambling, transportive track—including bandleader and saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi, Sons of Kemet tuba player Theon Cross and Shirley Tetteh, who besides performing in Nérija and Maisha, is also making moves with her solo project Nardeydey. Guest performer XANA steps in occasionally to provide spirited spoken word accompaniment.
“SEED Ensemble is my way of celebrating the vibrant and distinctive diversity that has significantly influenced what British culture has become over the centuries,” Kinoshi explained to The Vinyl Factory.
“I also hope that aspects of the music succeed in planting a ‘seed’ of awareness within the current climate of our society,” she continued. “It’s important to me that I shine a light on political subject matter which is often disregarded by the masses and highlight what it means to exist as a young Black British citizen today.”
Driftglass is out in February via Jazz Re:freshed. Listen to “Afronaut” below:
