Lakecia Benjamin honors John and Alice Coltrane on new album

‘Pursuance: The Coltranes’ features an all-star cast of collaborators.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin has released Pursuance: The Coltranes, a new record that honors the work of John and Alice Coltrane.

Benjamin’s third full-length album as bandleader, Pursuance boasts an all-star cast of collaborators that includes harpist Brandee Younger, trumpeter Keyon Harrold and saxophonist Gary Bartz. The likes of Jazzmeia Horn, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Meshell Ndegeocello sing on the record. Bassist Ron Carter, who has himself worked with the Coltranes, plays on “Syeeda’s Songflute.”

Seven of the songs on Pursuance were composed by John Coltrane, and the remaining six by Alice. All of them were compositions that resonated with Benjamin upon first listen.

“As an artist, it’s difficult to balance your personal life and career,” Benjamin said of the Coltranes in a statement. “This is a perfect example of a couple who had the best of both worlds—they took care of themselves, took care of the music, worked together, played together and they exemplified a completely functional, amazing relationship. You don’t need to sacrifice your art or your love—you can be one complete whole individual.”
