Drummer Kendrick Scott—and bandleader of the Oracle—has released a new album, A Wall Becomes a Bridge.
The follow-up to Scott’s 2015 album and Blue Note debut We are the Drum, this new record didn’t come easy. The Texas musician found himself up against a serious creative block, but not the typical kind “where I couldn’t come up with anything,” he told Revive Music in a recent interview. “It was just that I never finished. It was one of those things where I would get up, go to work, but I would never follow through,” Scott explained.
Producer Derrick Hodge, and Scott’s Oracle quintet—guitarist Mike Moreno, pianist Taylor Eigsti, reedist John Ellist, bassist Joe Sanders and turntablist Jahi Sundance—helped extricate the bandleader from the mental murk. The result is a 12-song cycle that Scott describes in a statement as “a response to a personal struggle that is also a collective one: how we are more connected than ever, but also more separated; and the opportunities that lie before us within that awareness.”
