Junius Paul steps boldly into the spotlight with “Asé”

    The first single from ‘Ism,’ the bassist’s album as bandleader.

    Chicago bassist Junius Paul has released “Asé,” an attention-grabbing single from his forthcoming album, Ism.

    The track kicks open the door with a dazzlingly athletic bass solo, and still leaves you wanting more. It previews the Chicagoan’s first record as bandleader, which was recorded with a host of collaborators across several studios and live venues in the Windy City. The bassist co-produced Ism alongside drummer and longtime collaborator Makaya McCraven, whose acclaimed 2018 album Universal Beings features Paul’s playing.

    Ism is out November 22 via International Anthem. Hear “Asé” below:
