Jon Batiste has released Anatomy of Angels: Live at the Village Vanguard, a collection of five live recordings made during his six-night residency at the historic New York City venue last year.
Most of the tracks on Anatomy of Angels are original Batiste compositions that have been in his repertoire for years now, though the Late Show with Stephen Colbert bandleader also made room for an arrangement of a Thelonious Monk cut, “Round Midnight.”
The record apparently features no edits or retakes. “It’s a snapshot of live art,” Batiste said in a statement. “I composed and arranged these songs as vehicles for exploration, to be dissected and put back together, live in action, never to be played the same way twice.”
Anatomy of Angels comes almost a year after the release of Hollywood Africans, Batiste’s latest studio album. Stream his new live record below:
