Saxophonist Joe Lovano has reconvened his Trio Tapestry for a new album, Garden of Expression.
Lovano made his debut as bandleader with pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi in 2019 on the trio’s eponymous album on ECM. That same year, the trio embarked on a European tour, which brought them to Lugano, Switzerland—where they recorded Garden of Expression in the studio Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI with producer Manfred Eicher.
As on Trio Tapestry, all eight compositions on the new record were written by Lovano. “Each of the pieces is a song of expression where rhythm doesn’t dictate the flow,” he said in a statement. “This is not a band that starts from the beat. The momentum is in the melody and the harmonic sequence. And rhythm evolves within each piece in a very free flowing manner… These two recordings—Trio Tapestry and Garden of Expression—are the only the albums I’m on that include real moments of silence from the whole group.”
