Joe Lovano makes bandleader debut with Trio Tapestry

Their eponymous album is out next month on ECM Records.

Joe Lovano, celebrated saxophonist and ECM Records mainstay, will make his bandleading debut with Trio Tapestry by releasing a self-titled album next year.

Trio Tapestry are rounded out by pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi. The group recorded the 11-track album in New York in March earlier this year. “We play together like an orchestra, creating an amazing tapestry,” Lovano commented. “I brought in the material, but there’s an equal weight of contribution, creating music within the music, and harmonizing it in a really special way.”

Trio Tapestry—which Lovano says contains “some of the most intimate and personal music I’ve recorded so far”—is out January 25 on ECM. Hear “Seeds of Change” below:
