JD Allen previews new LP with “You’re My Thrill”

‘Toys/Die Dreaming’ follows his 2019 record ‘Barracoon.’

Saxophonist JD Allen has released “You’re My Thrill”—the ballad most associate with Billie Holiday—from his upcoming album Toys/Die Dreaming.

Allen is backed by Ian Kenselaar on bass and Nic Cacioppo on drums on the record, his 14th as a bandleader and the follow-up to his 2019 album Barracoon.

Toys/Die Dreaming will exhibit Allen’s penchant for supplying short melodies as the foundation of both solo and group improvisation. In a 2019 interview with the New York Times, Allen described Kenselaar and Cacioppo—whom he hired in 2018—as “the bad boys of this generation, as far as I’m concerned: guys who are not afraid to dip their toe in the avant-garde a little bit, and then turn around and play the tradition.”

Toys/Die Dreaming is due out August 28 on Highnote-Savant Records. Stream “You’re My Thrill” here:
