Here’s a new, must-listen release for fans of jazz and The Beatles: Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, as interpreted by 12 jazz musicians.

A Day in the Life: Impressions of Pepper, which dropped last Friday on Verve, is a track-for-track homage to the legendary Fab Four record. Don’t call it a cover album, though—according to Verve, “what you hear on this record are not covers, but impressions of these iconic songs. A small part of a melody, a subtle bass riff inspired these artists to create something new.”

Notable musicians involved include Makaya McCraven, who dropped his album Universal Beings in October to critical acclaim; Sons of Kemet’s Shabaka Hutchings, who leads The Ancestors in a take on “Good Morning Good Morning”; and Antonio Sánchez, who performs both “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and its reprise.
