Jazz drummer Makaya McCraven releases “Young Genius”

A live collaboration recorded in a New York basement.

Makaya McCraven has given us another glimpse of his upcoming album, Universal Beings, in the form of “Young Genius.”

The Chicago-based jazz drummer recorded the sprawling, ambitious record with various musicians in four cities. “Young Genius” was recorded live in New York: specifically, the basement of the Queens venue H0l0.

And if you pay attention, you can hear some applause halfway through the track, which comes alive thanks to the masterful improvisation of McCraven and his collaborators: harpist Brandee Younger, bassist Dezron Douglas, vibraphonist Joel Ross and cellist Tomeka Reid.
