Immanuel Wilkins has shared “Grace and Mercy,” the second single to drop from his debut album Omega.
Where previous track “Warriors” sprang to life with busy saxophone and explosive percussion, “Grace and Mercy” takes a more minimalist approach with a largely peaceful flow—hinting at the diversity of Wilkins’ upcoming album.
“‘Grace and Mercy’ is about how God has shown me favor throughout my life, given me forgiveness and mercy,” Wilkins said in a press release. “I’m continuously striving to gain more compassion, empathy, forgiveness and humility.”
Wilkins’ debut LP draws upon his experience working with Solange Knowles, Wynton Marsalis, Aaron Parks and Joel Ross, and paints a picture of his experience as a Black person in North America. Pianist Micah Thomas, bassist Daryl Johns and drummer Kweku Sumbry play on the record, which was produced by Jason Moran.
Omega will be released on August 7 via Blue Note Records. Listen to “Grace and Mercy”:
