Trombonist Steve Davis leads a new sextet on Correlations, the 11-track album he released this past Friday.

Besides Davis, the group comprises Joshua Bruneau (trumpet/flugelhorn), Wayne Escoffery (saxophone), Xavier Davis (piano), Dezron Douglas (bass) and Jonathan Barber (drums). Though they’d never played together prior to Correlations, they had plenty of musical history—most of them attended Jackie McLean’s jazz studies program at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music, for instance.

“I’ve always tried to approach any band I’ve had over the years as our band,” Davis said in a statement. “Anything I write leaves plenty of room for everyone involved to help shape it. The three horns share a very natural camaraderie and simpatico, and the rhythm section is just magic. My job is just to provide the format, focus it with repertoire, and get out of the way and let it happen.”
