Hear Thundercat’s brand-new LP, ‘It is What it is’

Featuring Childish Gambino, Ty Dolla $ign, Steve Lacy and more.

Thundercat—aka bassist Stephen Bruner—has unveiled his fourth studio album, It is What it is.

The LP features a star-studded line-up of guest musicians, ranging from critically acclaimed rappers such as Childish Gambino (on “Black Qualls” alongside Steve Arrington and The Internet’s Steve Lacy) to vocalists like Ty Dolla $ign (on Mac Miller tribute “Fair Chance” with Lil B).

Bruner previewed the full-length with the anime-inspired song, “Dragonball Durag.” The single also received a characteristically odd video treatment, starring HAIM and Kali Uchis.

“This album is about love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that,” Bruner explained in a statement. “It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but at different points in life you come across places that you don’t necessarily understand […] some things just aren’t meant to be understood.”

It is What it is was co-produced by Thundercat and frequent collaborator Flying Lotus. His last LP, Drunk, arrived in 2017 via Flylo’s label Brainfeeder.
