Bill Frisell has released a new album, Valentine—his second for Blue Note Records.
The LP features a mix of Frisell originals, jazz standards and covers—including a second treatment of the protest anthem “We Shall Overcome.” It comes less than a year after his first Blue Note release, Harmony.
The guitarist recorded Valentine with his trio, bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston. In a chat with Blue Note president Don Was for the label’s video series First Look, Frisell shared more about his experiences working with them.
“Music is the world where anything is possible. You wanna feel like you can take a risk,” Frisell said. “It’s like when you’re dreaming and you come to the edge of the Grand Canyon, and I just wanna fly out there and see what happens. That’s what it feels like playing with these guys. It’s incredible.”
