Sarathy Korwar’s direct-to-disc recording for the label Night Dreamer is out now.
The five-track session was recorded in one take at Artone Studio in Haarlem, The Netherlands with the Upaj Collective (upaj meaning “to improvise” in Hindi). Korwar was on drums, playing with Tamar Osborn on Saxophone, Achuthan Sripathamanathan on violin, Giuliano Modarelli on guitar and Alistair Macsween.
The session opens with “So Said Said,” which is a tribute to influential postcolonial studies thinker Edward Said, and continues with a cover of “Flight IC408” by DJ State of Bengal. Then comes previously released track “Elephant Hangover,” which Korwar said in the liner notes is named for “the imagery that the tune conjures for me personally on listening to it.” It closes with a remix of “So Said Said” by producer Osunlade.
The Night Dreamer recording follows Korwar’s 2020 project Otherland and his 2019 album More Arriving. Earlier this year, Gary Bartz and Maisha also joined forces for a direct-to-disc session for Night Dreamer.
