Nubiyan Twist have released an energetic new song “If I Know,” the latest cut from their upcoming album Freedom Fables.
The jaunty track brims with Afrobeat sensibilities, beginning with jubilant horn hits and riffs that soon give way to a mellow rap segment courtesy of Ghanaian polymath K.O.G. A groovy beat lends the entire production an infectious momentum.
“‘If I Know’ is all about needing to respect everybody and to let them do their thing,” K.O.G. explained in a press release. “Whatever your feelings, you should not bring people down, you should always encourage them.”
Speaking about the forthcoming record, Nubiyan Twist producer and guitarist Tom Excell commented: “Freedom Fables reflects on the power of narratives. Each vocalist on this record explores their own memoirs, a freedom of expression underpinning our belief that music is the ultimate narrative for unity.”
“The record references a lot of music that we all loved during our formative years,” Excell added. “You can hear touches of broken beat, blunted hip hop, highlife, Latin, jazz and UK soul running through the tracks.”
“If I Know” is the latest of several cuts from the album to be released so far, including “24-7” featuring Ego Ella May, “Tittle Tattle” featuring CHERISE, and “Buckle Up” featuring Soweto Kinch. CHERISE also previously appeared on Nubiyan Twist’s 2019 single “Portraits.”
Freedom Fables is due out March 12 via Strut Records. It’s thefollow-up to the band’s acclaimed 2019 album Jungle Run. Listen to “If I Know” below:
