Hear Josh Johnson’s new song, “Western Ave”

From the upcoming album ‘Freedom Exercise.’

Saxophonist and keyboardist Josh Johnson has released “Western Ave,” another track from his upcoming debut album Freedom Exercise.

The adventurous new composition—named after the city-spanning thoroughfare of both Johnson’s longtime base of Los Angeles and original home of Chicago—is one of ten songs on Freedom Exercise, which arrives this October on Northern Spy Records. Though it’s Johnson’s first album as bandleader, he has more than made a name for himself as touring musical director for Leon Bridges and collaborator of Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven and Jeremy Cunningham.

Johnson co-produced the genre-bending Freedom Exercise alongside Paul Bryan. The record also features Gregory Uhlmann, Anna Butterss and Aaron Steele. Stream “Western Ave” here before the album arrives in full on October 9:
