Hear Brian Newman, Lady Gaga cover Nina Simone

A must-hear rendition of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.”

Trumpeter Brian Newman has just released a new album, Showboat, which features a very special guest: Lady Gaga, who joins him on a cover of Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.”

Newman and Gaga go way back—they met when they were both struggling musicians trying to make it in New York City (and they have matching tattoos to prove it). As their stars rose, they often collaborated, most notably on Gaga’s Cheek to Cheek album with Tony Bennett, and “La Vie En Rose” from the A Star is Born soundtrack.

And now they’ve reunited for this stunning take on “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” Showboat is predominantly a covers album—it also houses renditions of Thin Lizzy, Beck, Tom Waits and others—but it also includes an original, “San Pedro.” In an interview with Forbes, Newman called the album “a mix of all of my favorite influences over the years: the rock ’n’ roll I love, the tattoos, the hot rods and music and everything that goes along with that.”
