Hear Archie Shepp’s new song, “Tulips”

A collaboration with Raw Poetic and Damu the Fudgemunk.

Jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp has teamed up with Raw Poetic and Damu the Fudgemunk to release a new song, “Tulips.” It is the second track off their upcoming collaborative album Ocean Bridges.

“Tulips” is a percussive cut that deftly blends Shepp’s wailing brass-led jazz with a rhythmic hip hop delivery. The track proves to be a genre-defying collab that takes a bold step forward from the previously released Ocean Bridges single “Learning to Breathe,” which focused more on free-flowing jazz.

“During the studio session, the spontaneous music that would later become ‘Tulips’ was the second idea we laid down,” Damu the Fudgemunk revealed in a statement. “It would set the vibe for much of the recording that followed. Raw Poetic’s lyrics really illustrate the deeper meaning behind the Ocean Bridges album title on this tune.”

The lively energy heard on Ocean Bridges comes from the fact that the LP was entirely improvised in the studio. The sessions were recorded in Washington, DC in August last year by the trio of musicians. They were joined by guitarist Pat Fritz, Aaron Gause on keys, bassist Luke Stewart, and percussionist Bashi Rose. Jamal Moore also contributed to the record, handling an array of instruments.
