Hear an unearthed Sun Ra album from 1973

‘Crystal Spears’ will finally be officially released this week.

Sun Ra devotees have good reason to be happy this new year: Crystal Spears, an unreleased record from the ’70s, will finally be officially released by Modern Harmonic this Friday. The remastered four-track album is now available to stream on Bandcamp.

Crystal Spears was originally pressed in limited quantities as a Record Store Day 2018 release. The album was recorded in 1973 and intended for release in 1975, but newly installed executives at ABC/Impulse! had rejected it.

“It’s quite probable that the new execs didn’t comprehend what was happening on these recordings,” the record’s description theorizes. “For the uninitiated, this was not jazz as they knew it, but unbridled cacophony. But is it? Sun Ra always had a method to his madness—and a madness to his method.”

Ra—who died in 1993—and business manager Alton Abraham kept the rights to Crystal Spears, but never got around to issuing it. Now the world can hear this lost album, almost 50 years after its creation. Stream it below:
