A live album of a Horace Tapscott and Michael Session archival performance is out later this month, with the track “Retributions, Reparations” now available for listening.
The six-track album captures a performance by Tapscott, founder of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, and his close friend and collaborator Session on October 14, 1989 in Avignon, France. The pair had been on a European tour, presenting compositions by musicians from the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Leimert Park: Jesse Sharps, Nate Morgan and Tapscott himself. With Tapscott on piano and Session on saxophone, the duo tackle “Retributions, Reparations”—a Morgan composition—which they stretch out to nearly ten minutes.
