The next artist to collaborate with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad on a Jazz is Dead album is the revered saxophonist Gary Bartz. Though JID006 isn’t due out ’til next year, a new track from the record has been released: the opener “Spiritual Ideation.”
The entrancing four-minute track kick reels you in instantly with a sparkling keyboard line that’s soon joined by haunting flute flourishes and enlivening percussion. It’s the first of eight tracks on the sixth Jazz is Dead album, following records with Doug Carn and Roy Ayers, among others.
“Working with Gary Bartz epitomizes the ethos behind Jazz is Dead,” Younge said in a statement. “He’s a luminary that has contributed so much to music culture, for decades. His musical ability is expanding with age and we’re honored to be a part of his world.”
Bartz, who is 80, has maintained a busy touring and recording schedule deep into his silver years. After sharing the stage with spiritual jazz group Maisha at We Out Here Festival in 2018, he joined them in the studio for a direct-to-disc session, released on Night Dreamer in June.
JID006 featuring Gary Bartz is out March 13, 2021. Hear “Spiritual Ideation” below:
