Harpist Brandee Younger releases her fourth album

‘Soul Awakening’ pays tribute to Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane.

Harpist Brandee Younger has released her fourth studio album, Soul Awakening.

The eight-track record features original music by Younger—including some of her earliest compositions—as well as works by legendary harpists Dorothy Ashby (“Games”) and Alice Coltrane (“Blue Nile”). The latter’s son, Ravi Coltrane, appears on two songs: the opener “Soulris” and “Love’s Prayer.”

He also played an important role in ushering Soul Awakening—which was actually completed in 2013—into the world, Younger told Jazziz in a recent interview. “I was initially hesitant to put the record out and it was Ravi Coltrane who made me look at it differently,” she shared.

“He said a record is literally a documentation of where you are at that time. As a musician, one of the hardest things to do is to get out of your own head but looking at it that way helped me realize it was time to put it out there.”
