Last Friday, English guitarist Mansur Brown released his first solo album, Shiroi.
Adherents of London’s jazz scene might remember Brown’s name from Yussef Kamaal’s 2016 album Black Focus—specifically, the track “Mansur’s Message”—and also from drummer Yussef Dayes’ solo debut single, “Love is the Message” (are you sensing a trend here?).
So it’s no surprise that Shiroi was released on Black Focus Records, which was founded by Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu) of Yussef Kamaal. The 11-track album finds the guitarist in his element, channeling the likes of Jimi Hendrix (in the cosmic solo on “God Willing,” for instance) and weaving in some trap and R&B.
