Gregory Porter takes us to church with his new song, “Revival”

From his upcoming album, ‘All Rise.’

Grammy-winning jazz singer Gregory Porter has released his soulful new single, “Revival.”

The gospel-inspired song’s accompanying video follows the adventures of a young man living in the ’70s. While watching television, he suddenly shrinks and is chased around by the house cat. He escapes and travels to a nightclub where Porter is performing.

The young man starts growing back to his original height as Porter sings and soon heads home. But on the way back, he keeps on getting taller, before turning into a giant at the end.

“[‘Revival] is straight-up gospel. This [is] what I heard in church. When somebody caught the Holy Ghost this was the beat,” Porter said in a press release. “You don’t have to be a believer to understand revival and renewal, starting all over again afresh. For me, it’s the message of walking into this life and having some fear and some self-doubt, and at the point that you grab onto something that you know is real, the truth.”

“Revival” is the first taste of Porter’s forthcoming album, All Rise. The record, which is the follow-up to 2017’s Nat King Cole & Me, arrives April 17 via Blue Note Records.
