London- and Haarlem-based direct-to-disc record label Night Dreamer has released a joint record by veteran saxophonist Gary Bartz and British jazz collective Maisha.
The five-track release is a collaboration across spiritual jazz generations. Bartz found his feet in the ’60s by playing with McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers before stepping up to join Miles Davis’ band in mid-1970. In 2015, the saxophonist earned the BNY Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award. Maisha, on the other hand, are currently carving out the future of spiritual jazz both in the United Kingdom and abroad under the careful direction of their bandleader and drummer Jake Long.
Bartz first met Maisha when he was invited to join the group onstage at the inaugural We Out Here festival. Their Night Dreamer release, recorded some time later in Haarlem, The Netherlands, mixes three original tunes by Bartz and Maisha written on the day of recording, alongside two live renditions of Bartz compositions.
Maisha’s collaboration with Bartz is their first project following their 2018 debut record, There is a Place. Listen to the joint release below:
