Jazz musician Emma-Jean Thackray has released the new EP, Rain Dance.
The four-song release is Thackray’s first since 2018’s Ley Lines, although the London-based trumpeter has since released a handful of compositions and a remix of Mathilda Homer’s “Too Much.”
Rain Dance’s title track is a hazy number that switches from brass-focused segments into percussive blooms of sound centered around brittle cymbal washes. Each track on Rain Dance features distinct elements that separate them from their peers, whether that be the vocal elements of “Open” or “Movementt”’s dance rhythm.
The release of Rain Dance also marks the launch of Thackray’s own label, Movementt (which was named for the song from the EP).
“[The label] came about through needing a home for all my music, no matter what form the music took,” Thackray recently told Dazed. “I wanted a home for all of it, whether it was free jazz or house or both or in-between or neither… everything released on Movementt, whether from myself or another artist, will follow the mantra of music that moves the body, moves the mind, and moves the soul.”
