Indonesian guitarist Dewa Budjana has released his new album Mahandini, which features former Red Hot Chili Peppers man John Frusciante and Dream Theater’s Jordan Rudess, among others.
Budjana, who is also known for his guitar work in long-running pop band Gigi, has carved out a place for himself in the vibrant intersection of prog, jazz and fusion. Mahandini, his 11th solo album, was recorded in a single day in Los Angeles.
The core team Budjana assembled for the album comprises keyboardist Rudess, drummer Marco Minnemann and bassist Mohini Dey, who also contributed an energetic konnakol vocal performance to the track “Queen Kanya.” The record is bookended by notable contributions from Frusciante: He wrote the opener “Crowded,” and sings on the closer “Zone.”
Other guests on the album include jazz guitarist Mike Stern, who appears on “ILW,” and Indonesian singer and television star Soimah Pancawati, who provides bewitching vocals on “Hyang Giri.”
Though Mahandini will be officially released internationally next month, the album is already available on streaming services. Check it out below:
