Daniel Herskedal drops “Batten Down the Hatches”

The captivating opener of the Norwegian tuba player’s forthcoming album, ‘Voyage.’

Norwegian tuba player Daniel Herskedal has announced his new album, Voyage, and released its captivating opener, “Batten Down the Hatches.”

The song comes out of the gate bursting with energy, thanks to Herskedal’s urgent, rhythmic tuba playing, before Bergmund Waal Skaslien enters on the viola. Pianist Eyolf Dale and percussionist Helge Andreas Norbakken round out the core group of musicians. “Batten Down the Hatches” definitely lives up to its title: You can picture it soundtracking a scene of harried sailors bracing for a huge storm.

As song titles like “The Gulls are Tossed Paper in the Wind” and “Rescue-at-sea Operations” make clear, the rest of Voyage looks to continue the same nautical theme. The album is out March 8 on Edition Records.
