Charles Lloyd & the Marvels have released “Anthem,” from the upcoming album Tone Poem.
Lloyd and the Marvels—Bill Frisell on guitar, Greg Leisz on pedal steel guitar, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums—have put their own spin on Leonard Cohen’s 1992 classic “Anthem.” Though Cohen’s original was famous for the lines “There’s a crack in everything / It’s how the light gets in,” their rendition is a purely instrumental one.
It follows the group’s rendition of Ornette Coleman’s “Ramblin’.” Both tracks will appear on their album Tone Poem, which will mark Lloyd and the Marvels’ first recording without guest vocalists. It’s also the 82-year-old saxophonist’s sixth album for Blue Note since he returned to the label in 2015.
