Bryant K’s “Dreams” is a lo-fi mash-up of soul, jazz and hip hop

Like spinning J Dilla in a smoky, downtown NYC jazz joint.

“Springtime in the park gang banger love ballads.” That’s how Bryant K describes his new seven-inch on Stones Throw, Dreams/Rooms. And, listening to the A-side, you’ll realize he’s spot on.

Together with keyboardist Dylan Maida, the idiosyncratic vocalist spins a lazy, deliberately rough-around-the-edges yarn that kinda sounds like a J Dilla remix of a Stevie Wonder tune. Which fizzes through an AM radio in a dimly lit jazz club. It’s not straight-up jazz, soul or hip hop, but a smoldering concoction of the trio.
