Yellowcard withdraw copyright lawsuit against Juice WRLD

The band had filed the suit in October 2019, a few months before the rapper’s death.

Yellowcard have dropped their multi-million copyright lawsuit against Juice WRLD, in which they accused the late rapper of plagiarising parts of his 2018 hit “Lucid Dreams” from their 2006 song, “Holly Wood Died.”

The lawsuit, which was put on hold earlier this year after the rapper’s death in December 2019, has now been dismissed. According to The New York Times, Yellowcard’s lawyer, Richard Busch, signed papers on Monday (July 27) confirming the band had “voluntarily” withdrawn the lawsuit.

The dismissal comes shortly after Juice WRLD’s estate appointed the rapper’s mother, Carmela Wallace, as a representative for the case. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Busch said his clients felt “uncomfortable about pursuing this action against Juice WRLD’s grieving mother as the representative of his estate.”

“They also are incredibly sympathetic about his death,” he continued, “and were torn initially about pursuing this in light of his death. As a result of all that has happened, they simply need additional time to decide what they want to do.” However, Busch noted that Yellowcard dropped the lawsuit “without prejudice,” meaning the band could “refile” the case in the future.

Yellowcard filed the complaint on October 21, 2019, seeking at least $15 million in damages. The suit claimed “Lucid Dreams” had copied “melodic elements” of “Holly Wood Died,” arguing that the two songs are “not only substantially similar… but in some places virtually identical.”

Juice died in December from an accidental drug overdose. The rapper’s first posthumous album, Legends Never Die, arrived earlier this month. It included the tracks “Wishing Well,” “Tell Me U Luv Me” and the Halsey-assisted “Life’s a Mess.”

Yellowcard disbanded in 2017 after releasing their final self-titled album in 2016.
