XXXTentacion has been shot and killed in what police have described as a “possible robbery” in South Florida. He was 20.
The rapper, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was visiting a motorcycle dealership just north of Miami when the two armed suspects approached him. At least one opened fire, according to the Broward Sheriff’s office, striking X. They fled the scene immediately after. The rapper was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but could not be revived.
XXXTentacion rose to fame via SoundCloud in 2016 and released his debut album, 17, last year. His follow-up, ?, which arrived in March, debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts. The rapper has courted controversy in the past, and had been awaiting trial for charges of domestic violence and kidnapping.
No doubt his passing has shocked the hip hop community, with artists such as Kanye West and J Cole taking to social media to mourn his death. His track “Sad!” recently entered the Top 10 US iTunes chart—and was a sign of big things to come.
