His first solo release of 2020.

Loyle Carner has released a new Madlib-produced track called “Yesterday.”

It arrived with a video directed by Carner and his brother Ryan, and marks the London rapper’s first solo release since his 2019 album, Not Waving, But Drowning. On the track, Carner explores past and present racial injustices, while the clip navigates his journey as a multiracial artist.

“It’s really just about what it is to be black and white, in a world where you pretty much have to be one or the other,” the rapper said in a press release. “It hurts the way I felt about my race back then, is the same way I feel now. Nothing’s changed since my last entry, nothing’s changed since the last century.”

“I hope that soon this song is nothing more than a reminder of a different time, and collectively we’re able to move forward to a time of more respect, acceptance and understanding,” he added.

Earlier this year, Carner collaborated with Joesef on the single, “I Wonder Why.” Not Waving, But Drowning featured Jorja Smith, Tom Misch, Jordan Rakei, his mother and more.
