After stoking anticipation for months, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin have finally announced the follow-up to their 2016 joint album, Savage Mode, with a brand-new trailer.
The minute-long clip was directed by avant-garde filmmaker Gibson Hazard, who’s previously worked with artists like The Weeknd, Lil Uzi Vert and Billie Eilish, among others. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the grainy visual opens at a cemetery before red-eyed ravens swoop in and fly toward a creepy mansion where 21 and Metro are recording in the studio.
But unknown to the rapper-producer pair is a group of murderous robbers, who are lurking in the building’s shadows. “Savage is defined as this: beastly and untamed. Mode is defined as a way of operating or using a system,” narrator Morgan Freeman says.
“So to be in savage mode is to go hard, not allowing anything to stop or deter you from your mission. Basically, this means when someone is in savage mode, they’re not to be fucked with.”
21 and Metro then get stabbed and are replaced by two mysterious hooded figures, who are later revealed to be darker versions of themselves. As soon as the beat drops, blood gushes out from the studio and into the hallway as Freeman declares that Savage Mode 2 is imminent.
The sequel to 2016’s Savage Mode officially drops this Friday. The project was teased since late 2019 and was later confirmed by 21 earlier this year. In May, the Atlanta rapper revealed that he and Metro were making sure the record was “perfect” before releasing it to the world. “Shit takes time. I be putting a lot of hard work into my shit. I ain’t just about to drop anything,” he said during an Instagram Live session.
