Watch Sampa the Great’s vibrant ‘Tiny Desk’ performance

Fan favorites from ‘The Return’ and more.

Sampa the Great is the latest artist to appear on the home edition of NPR’s Tiny Desk series.

For the vibrant performance, the Australian-based rapper returned to Zambia, where she was born, and enlisted the best musicians from its capital city of Lusaka. “It feels to good to perform. It’s been a minute,” Sampa said in between breathless renditions of “Rhymes to the East” and “Mwana.” She added, “Freedom is what we feel when we perform. And freedom is what the world is in need of right now. In this pandemic, it feels like we all need a sense of freedom.”

Elsewhere in her set, Sampa also performed new renditions of “Freedom” and “Final Form,” both from her 2019 album, The Return. Other songs on the album include, “OMG” and “Heaven.” Most recently, the rapper teamed up with Quakers on “Approach with Caution.”
