Watch Rod Wave’s soulful NPR ‘Tiny Desk’ performance

The artist showcased cuts from his new album, ‘SoulFly.’

Rod Wave is the latest artist to deliver a remote performance for NPR’s Tiny Desk series.

Standing amid lush greenery with his backing band in a gazebo, the Florida crooner began with a partial rendition of Drake’s “Over My Dead Body,” which served as the delicate intro to the Canadian titan’s 2011 album, Take Care. Rod then transitioned into his own song, “OMDB,” which shares the same initials as the Drizzy track.

Wave later followed the song with a few other cuts from his SoulFly album, including “Street Runner” and “Don’t Forget.” The 19-track project debuted last month at the top of the Billboard 200, becoming his first-ever number one album.

“Personally, I feel like I hit my creative peak,” he said of SoulFly during his performance. “I put a lot into this. A lot of thought, a lot of effort, a lot of pain.”

Along with the new material, Wave also performed his 2020 hit, “Rags2Riches.” The song featured ATR Son Son and appeared on Wave’s 2020 album Pray 4 Love. It later gained a verse from Lil Baby on the deluxe edition.
