Watch Lil Nas X’s video for heartfelt single “Sun Goes Down”

The rapper encourages his younger self in the moving visual.

Lil Nas X has released the music video for his latest single “Sun Goes Down.”

The rapper confronts his past insecurities, capturing his anxieties as a teenager in the song’s cathartic refrain. “I wanna run away/ Don’t wanna lie, I don’t want a life / Send me a gun and I’ll see the sun,” he sings.

In the music video, Lil Nas travels back in time to comfort his teenage self, who is struggling with loneliness and self-loathing. The music video ends with the younger Lil Nas accepting who he is and enjoying his time at high school prom. His real-life father also makes a cameo appearance, picking teen Lil Nas up from his job at Taco Bell.

“In the ‘Sun Goes Down’ video I go back in time to visit a younger version self who’s struggling inside, hating himself, & doesn’t want to live anymore,” Lil Nas tweeted prior to the video’s release. “I try my best to uplift him… This one is really special to me.”

The moving video follows the flamboyantly controversial music video for previous single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” which caused even more furore with an accompanying run of “Satan shoes.”

Lil Nas X also made an appearance in Brockhampton’s “Count on Me” music video last month. He will be the musical guest on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
