Last Thursday, 2 Chainz performed “Forgiven” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
He brought the Rap or Go to the League opener to life on stage, enlisting the help of a string section, a children’s choir and R&B singer Marsha Ambrosius. The result was a far cry from the normal lively and energetic performances that the 41-year-old is known for.
On the song, Tity Boi addresses the death of a friend’s son, and his choice to work on music instead of pursuing a basketball career, dropping bars like “Got a phone call from Lil’ Fate / Somebody shot his son, he didn’t make it / My head achin’, hands started shakin’ / Foul beyond flagrant.”
He ended the performance with a warning to the younger ones in the audience: “If you’re doing something that might make your parents have to bury you, you may wanna slow down.”
Rap or Go to the League is the fifth studio LP by 2 Chainz and features a star-studded cast of guest artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, Chance the Rapper and Travis Scott.
