Vince Staples has released the first episode for his new web series, The Vince Staples Show. It’s soundtracked by a new song, “So What?”
The video begins with Vince getting a call from his assistant to perform at Malia Obama’s 21st birthday party. Discussions ensue over breakfast preparations, and the rapper comes to the conclusion that he needs a haircut.
He heads to the barbershop, and tensions start to rise as Staples is turned in his chair to face two surly men. A kid pulls out Staples’ earphones, revealing the rapper’s rival gang affiliation through his music of choice. A sloppy brawl then commences, but we won’t spoil the outcome.
The track “So What” that plays in the video is a pretty straightforward cut that sees Staples confront the media and his haters over their obsessions about him: “The media be on my dick, they wanna cop a feel / I go too hard to kill, you know it stay with me (You know it) / I only show the real, still, they hate on me.”
Vince crafted the video with director Calmatic, who most notably worked on the video for Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road”—which Staples also made a cameo in. His last album, FM!, dropped in 2018 to critical acclaim.
