Vic Mensa’s dropping a fresh EP next month, and if this video for new track “Dark Things” is any indication, it looks like a change in musical direction for the Chicago rapper.
“Dark Things” arrived with a video, directed by Bobby Hannaford, that depicts Mensa as a crazed, vampiric figure, surrounded by mysterious women reminiscent of Aaliyah’s Akasha in Queen of the Damned. He raps anguished, Auto-Tuned bars about mental torment—“Dark things in my mind again / I don’t wanna have a bad night again”—and his weakening will to live—“25, running out of time / 27 club, how can I get in?”
The song will feature with Mensa’s G-Eazy collab “Reverse” on the Hooligans EP, which is out December 14. “Growing up, we referred to ourselves as the Hyde Park Hooligans,” Mensa said in a statement. “So with the EP I wanted to encapsulate energies that represented that experience as well as what’s going on in my life now, for better or for worse.”
