Being a genre-blending, multi-talented artist means that Tierra Whack can write sharp lyrics, spit hard bars, and sing a catchy chorus in the course of a single song. Just take her newest track, “Only Child.”
The song’s a testament to her versatility: she starts out singing an upbeat hook then swiftly shifts to unloading sharpened bars. The lyrics speak to a selfish person whom Whack thinks must be an “Only Child.”
She sings, “You must be the only child, because you’re so stingy / I just wanna go buck wild when you don’t defend me / I been on the fucking prowl, I been counting Benjis / You done turned my heart so cold, I should work at Friendly’s.”
The 23-year-old rapper, singer and songwriter caught everyone’s attention with her 2018 album Whack World, a suite of minute-long songs, each accompanied by a striking visual. “Only Child” shows she’s not slowing down even after that artistic triumph.
