Vic Mensa has surprise-released a new mixtape simply titled V Tape.
The 26-minute project collects seven new songs, including collaborations with Eryn Allen Kane, Snoh Aalegra, SAINt JHN, BJ the Chicago Kid and Peter Cottontale. “No More Teardrops,” a song Mensa recently debuted during his set at the virtual edition of Lollapalooza 2020, unfortunately, does not appear on the tape.
In a statement on Instagram, Mensa said he hoped his new mixtape helps fans contend with whatever issues or troubles they’ve had to deal with during these trying times. “The past 18 months have been humbling to say the least,” he wrote. “I’ve had to learn to love myself again. I had to move back to Chicago. Most importantly, I had to realize that every human deserves empathy and recognition of their humanity.”
The songs on V Tape dropped with their own visualizers, each telling a compelling story about a predominantly Black American neighborhood. However, “Machiavelli,” Mensa’s joint track with Kane, was the only song to receive a proper music video. Check out all the clips here:
