Dreamville-affiliated supergroup Spillage Village have released a video for their new song “End of Daze.”
Spillage Village count Dreamville standouts JID and EarthGang among their number, as well as 6LACK, Mereba, Jurdan Bryant, Hollywood JB and Benji. The Atlanta crew recorded the song during the pandemic, and between the soulful hooks reflect verse-by-verse on living through what feels like the end of the world.
Mereba spits: “It’s been like apocalypse since I was on the teat / Reagan worked for Satan how he preyed upon the meek / Ask too many questions, do you work for the police? They took brother Nipsey, what a pity for the streets.” Hollywood JB adds, “The news keep on sayin’ we’ll die soon / So sit back and roll up to my tunes / And if I’m gone before the end of the song / Just tell my mom I ain’t get rich yet, but I tried to.”
The smoke-filled video directed by Caleb Seales features most of Spillage Village—some of them wearing face masks—chilling on a couch in the backyard. Together, they gaze at a television that scrolls through bleak footage of our turbulent times, from scenes of protests for George Floyd to a news report about Kobe Bryant’s death. It closes with a quote from James Baldwin: “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
“End of Daze” breaks a years-long silence for Spillage Village, whose last release was the 2016 EP Bears Like This Too Much. After that, various members’ careers began to take off: In November 2016, 6LACK released his debut album Free 6LACK. In 2017, JID announced he’d signed to Dreamville, which released his debut album The Never Story later that year. EarthGang signed to Dreamville in 2017 as well.
More recently, many Spillage Village members appeared on the 2019 Dreamville compilation, Revenge of the Dreamers III, which was expanded earlier this year with 12 additional songs. On the solo front, 6LACK dropped the new song “ATL Freestyle” in late May, while EarthGang dropped their major label debut, Mirrorland, last September.
