Sampa the Great gets real about artistic “Freedom” on new song

Her debut album, ‘The Return,’ arrives next month.

Sampa the Great wants to know how much artistic freedom means to you on her thought-provoking new single, “Freedom.”

On the soulful track, the Sydney-based rapper discusses the compromises she’s had to make to balance “earning a living and expressing [her musical] artistry,” she said in a press release. Despite the drawbacks, she considers it a “blessing being able to create and express yourself through the arts.” At the end of the track, Sampa insistently poses a question to listeners: “Freedom, what’s it to you?”

“Freedom” is the latest single from Sampa’s forthcoming debut album, The Return, following “OMG” and “Final Form.” The record will feature production from Silentjay, Kwes Darko, Clever Austin, Blue Lab Beats and Syreniscreamy, as well as collaborations with Ecca Vandal and London jazz collective Steam Down. It arrives September 13 via Ninja Tune.
