Sampa the Great delivers excellence on “Final Form”

The Melbourne-based rapper’s first release on Ninja Tune.

Melbourne-based rapper Sampa the Great—real name Sampa Tembo—has released the supremely confident “Final Form,” her first single on English label Ninja Tune.

“Final Form”—which was produced by Sampa’s longtime collaborator Silent Jay, and mixed by Jonwayne—draws on evocative vocal and horn samples and classic hip hop sounds for its infectious beat. Sampa raps about showing up those who underestimate her (“Nah, knock the walls off / Fuck the whole key, we gonna hinge the whole door off”) and her pride in her black, African identity (“Bone of my bone / Flesh of my flesh / Greatness in me, you can’t make me feel less”).

Sampa filmed the accompanying music video in her native Zambia ahead of a run of shows in Africa, bringing together traditional Nyau dancers and modern Zambian youth culture in the vibrant clip.
