RZA has revived his Bobby Digital alter ego for the first time in 13 years to release a new single called “Pugilism.”
The song is also the first offering from the Wu-Tang Clan rapper-producer’s forthcoming album, Bobby Digital: Digital Potions. Spitting as Bobby, RZA weaves wordplay and kung fu movie references over a piano-laced beat on “Pugilism.” “All that poison in the air / I’m immune to it,” he raps. “You thought you could defeat my finger jab / That was humorous.”
Along with the single, RZA also announced a new series called Saturday Afternoon Kung Fu Theater with RZA, which will stream on his 36 Cinema website. Wu-Tang and martial arts movies have gone hand-in-hand ever since Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and with the new series, RZA will provide commentary on classic films. The first installment on April 24, the site notes, will feature the Shaw Brothers’ Heroes of the East.
During the screening, RZA may reveal more details about Bobby Digital: Digital Potions, which will be his first album as Bobby Digital since 2008’s Digi Snacks.
Last August, RZA sold a 50 percent stake in his music catalog to the company Hipgnosis Songs. He also released the new song “Be Like Water,” a tribute to Bruce Lee that was used in an ESPN documentary on the martial artist and cinema icon. And last February, he released Guided Explorations, an EP of tracks for meditation.
